Oliver's Vegetables

Oliver's Vegetables

Kapiti on: Oliver's Vegetables

Week beginning 07/05/2018

This week we have been learning about vegetables and have been amazed by how tall our bean plants have grown. We will be sending them home this week and would love the children to tell us if their plants produce any beans. We have looked at a huge variety of vegetables and have been describing them using our senses. We then wrote sentences about them. We also made vegetable soup. It was delicious, but the weather this week has been a bit hot for soup! We have been learning the different parts of a plant and have written labels. In Maths we have been learning to add by counting on. During our circle time we have been thinking about what the word smart means to us and have discussed smart behaviour choices and how we can make smart choices to help us learn. This week we have enjoyed looking at home learning challenges which are being shared on Tapestry. It is so exciting to see the children talking about their work and sharing it with the class, and it is fantastic to see how enthusiastic they are to continue their learning at home with you. Next week we are continuing to learn about plants we eat and are looking forward to seeing you all at our learning together session on Wednesday afternoon where we will be making fruit salad.

Week Beginning 30/04/2018

It’s been another busy week in the Reception classrooms! We have continued learning about plants and growth and have been really excited to see our bean plants growing. The beans we planted have sprouted and are starting to emerge from the soil. We have been predicting how tall they will grow. We also  followed instructions to plant sunflowers and then we wrote our own! We have been learning about time and have been sequencing the days of the week. We have been answering questions and talking about the day before and the day after. We have also been learning to read the time on an analogue clock. We have spent time thinking about our school motto of ‘Try your best to be your best’ and have thought about what the word belonging means to us and how we show that we all belong. On Tuesday we all took part in the start of our school Step into Summer campaign and ran laps around the school field. We challenged the children to run around it 4 times which is 1 mile, but they amazed us and kept going. Kapiti class completed 151 laps. That is 37 and ¾ miles! Next week we will be learning about growing vegetables and reading the book Oliver’s Vegetables.

Jack and The Beanstalk

Jack and The Beanstalk

Kapiti on: Jack and The Beanstalk

Week beginning 23/04/2018

This week we have been reading different versions of the story Jack and the Beanstalk and have sequenced the story, written parts of it and imagined what we would find at the top of a beanstalk if we planted magic beans. The children were very excited thinking about this and their ideas were very imaginative. We have made repeating patterns using colourful jellybeans and have made beanstalks using playdough. We measured these and compared them to find out who had made the longest and the shortest. We also used different types of beans and added handfuls together. We wrote number sentences to show how many we had altogether. We have painted Spring trees and role played the story of the week. We have also planted bean seeds and are looking forward to watching them grow. Key Stage One have been incubating eggs and this week they hatched. We were very lucky and were able to visit them. We were very quiet and we all got to stroke them. There were 7 eggs of different breeds and 6 of them hatched, they were lovely! Next week we are continuing to think about beanstalks and will be reading the story Jaspers Beanstalk.

Spring

Spring

Kapiti on: Spring

Week beginning 16/04/2018

We were so pleased to see the children after their Easter break and we have loved hearing all their holiday news. This week we started our new topic of ‘Out and About’ and have been looking for signs of Spring. We have been very busy writing about the things that we see in the springtime and have made a garden centre for our role play. We have been learning about money and have been buying and selling flowers, seeds and bulbs with our friends. We have used pastels to draw pictures of daffodils and have colour mixed paint to create rainbows. We have also investigated colour in our science lessons. Next week we will be reading stories about beanstalks and planting beans.

Birthdays!

admin on: Kapiti and Rakiura

Welcome to our first week of full time school!

We have been having lots of fun exploring our inside and outside environments.

This week we have been learning about birthdays and we have been planning a birthday party for our class teddies. We have explored cloud dough to make cakes and played with sparkly playdough. We have written invitations and made hats and cards for the birthday party on Friday. We also baked our own cakes!

Next week our theme is apples. There will be lots of counting, measuring and creative activities. We would love the children to all bring in an apple from home so that we can compare them over the week.

We have some fantastic artists in our class. Today one of the children showed me a picture of his family that he had spent lots of time drawing. Wonderful learning and a future artist for sure.

Remembrance Poppy

admin on: Kapiti and Rakiura

We have been thinking a lot about Remembrance this week. We have learnt so much through listening to stories. We made our own poppies by hand printing the petals with red paint and using our fingers to depict the black centre.

The Great Indian Banquet!

admin on: Kapiti and Rakiura

Today we learnt about Indian food. We tried Popadoms and Mango Chutney which surprisingly most of us loved and wanted more! We ate Naan Bread with Rice and butter curry sauce. The children enjoyed using there fingers to eat the food and enjoyed learning about food from around the world.
