Inclusion & SEN


At Kiwi we use the definition for SEN and for disability from the SEND Code of Practice (2014) and the Equality Act (2010). This states that:

“A child or young person has special educational needs if he or she has a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for him or her. A learning difficulty or disability is a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age. Special educational provision means educational or training provision that is additional to, or different from, which is made generally for others of the same age in a mainstream setting in England.”


“Many children and young people who have SEN may have a disability under the Equality Act 2010 -that is ‘A physical or mental impairment which has a long-term and substantial adverse effect on their ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.”

Support will always include ‘Quality First Teaching’ and can also include:

  • Extra Literacy Support
  • Extra Numeracy Support
  • Small group work
  • School Nurse
  • Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA)
  • 1:1 interventions
  • Visual Impairment Team
  • Hearing Impairment Team
  • Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS)
  • Specialist SEN Service (SSENS)

We aim to create an environment where we celebrate diversity and know that we are all equally valued and respected as individuals. We aim to develop the whole child so that they leave our school as confident, independent learners as well as creative, critical thinkers. We encourage high quality work through high expectations.

Every term the progress of all pupils is monitored closely.  Using assessments we monitor children's progress. Any child may have additional educational needs at some point during his/her school time in school, using regular assessments we can monitor children's progress.

If a pupil requires support that is additional to, or different from the quality first teaching that takes place in the classroom, provision will be made for them to have 1:1 or small group support to help them to close gaps in their learning. Staff are also committed to providing personalised and targeted provision by accessing support from outside agencies. Children who have further support or take part in interventions will be closely monitored.

What should I do as a parent with concerns?

If you have concerns your first point of contact is the class teacher. After a discussion with your child's class teacher, Kiwi can begin to put the needed provision in place or we can recommend relevant outside agencies who can offer your child support. What support is available to children with SEN?

All children with SEN have their needs met firstly in the classroom through high quality first teaching and differentiated tasks to suit their needs. Children may also take part in interventions with the class teacher or teaching assistant throughout the morning sessions.

If needed, the SENCo can invite outside agencies in to school, to support children or refer children to be observed and assessed by outside professionals. Recommendations can then be offered to best support the individual child.
